I have a small 5 gal tank running with a Fluval U2 filter and currently have a baby BN plec that was from a pair living in my 5ft SA/CA Cichlid tank and 2 x dwarf frogs.....

I was wondering are there any dwarf cichlids that could go in the 5gal tank?

Alternatively any other interesting but small fish anyone would reccomend?

If not i guess i will just go with a betta!

The smallest size tank that's recommend for any dwarf cichlid that i know of is 10 gal, and that's for the smallest variety of african shelldwellers

I can't think of anything that could remotely fit in just 5 gal sorry, upsize

i've heard of several people that have a pair of neolamprologus brevis, it's not a a new world cichlid but it's an awesome fish. they come from lake lake tanganyika (one of the african rift lakes) and are shell dwellers that only get about 2 inches big as a makle and about and inch for females.

Interesting, to be honest I am completely open to suggestion so wouldn't mind of they weren't a new world cichlid......

I will do some research and ask the guys at my LFS! Thanks for advice :)

"Tank Setup
N. brevis is a very unique cichlid. It is the only fish in the whole cichlid family that you can successfully breed an adult pair in a 5 gallon aquarium. How ever I suggest you only put a bonded pair in a 5 gallon.
A 10 gallon can be home to 2 adult pairs of N. brevis. This can be done successfully but not without the occasional scuffles and split fins. I prefer a 20 gallon long for 2 pairs of Brevis. The extra floor room makes a big difference and in a 20 long there is displaying but very rarely an actual fight between the pairs."

You might get away with a male Dicrossus maculatus or any of the Dicrossus species but if you want a perch type fish for a small tank I would get a trio of Badis or Dario fish you can get some awesome species in the hobby now lots of colour and just as much attitude and character as most dwarf cichlids but only getting to a small size but a lot of colour per inch so to speak.

TBH the only kind of fish I'd put in a 5gal is a Betta. And/or some shrimps. I think it's too cramped for anything else :/

Hmmm, maybe it would be a good idea to grab a cheap 10gal..... anyone know of any sites to get v.cheap tanks?

Worth looking through your local free ads etc for an old tank assuming you have all the other bits such as heater, filter and lights
