Driftwood Problem

If you look at the DIY forum I asked this same question but I decided to make another topic here since more people look at this forum than the DIY.

I recently went to a lake and brought back driftwood and slate.



Question: I keep trying to make the driftwood sink but no success yet. The driftwood is too big to fit in a pan but wont the driftwood just sink once its absorbed enough water or do I have to boil it for a couple of hours. Cause I dont feel like carrying pots of boiling water to my bathtub.

Question 2: Im not sure that this peice is really driftwood so how can I tell if its the real thing or just some rotten log.
