Dragon Fly Another New Pic

Wow, cool. That's definitely a damselfly.

If you find one of these little guys in the tank, that's a nymph.

The nymphs don't post as much a risk to small fish as dragonfly nymphs do, as they tend to be smaller.

Tetras and minnows would be safe, guppy fry may not though. Adult shrimp should be safe too.

thats the first one i found in my aquaone 130t the others in the 180 were all blue with longer tails and a lot bigger - will take a pic if i get more again - they are euthanised properly before flushing - shame i know but noone near me wants them

 make a new years resolution to never kill another one and you`ll feel less guilty ;) remember to cross your fingers when you say it !!

and a happy new year to you xxxxxxxxxxx

As much as it goes against my nature I think I agree they have to be euthanised, otherwise they are only going to starve to death which won't be very nice for such graceful creature.
Not sure but it could be the blue tailed damsel which is relatively common but you might want to contact the dragonfly society and see what they say about the problem...?

I think the best thing you could do for future nymphs would be to move them to another container / tank and slowly lower the water temperature. This should persuade them to hang round longer for a release later in the year.

I don't understand... how would you have dragonflys in a fish tank? They can't live underwater, or at least the ones here in the US can't.. where did the dragonflies come from?

I actually go out of my way to look for dragonfly nymphs every week in tanks with plants in them with no luck, it's so unfair that so many people eon here get cool critters in their tanks

there isn't any dragon flies in the UK?! or is this a special type?

All dragonflies/damselflies/darters have a very long aquatic stage where they exist as a nymph.

They only go though metamorphosis and turn into flies for the last stage of their life :good:.

We have loads dragonflies in the UK, but I rarely see them in the city.

see lots of them in devon :) lovely when we go into town to the river in the nice weather lots of them buzzing around

the only way i can imagine they got in is on the bogwood as that was the only addition to the tank i think they could have come on on
it is planted tropica bogwood from pets at home so its already soaked and you get it out of their tanks

There has been a recent discovery of a species of dragonfly that has a terrestrial nymph believe it or not! I am damned if i can find the link right now basically the nymphs make tunnels in mud banks!

Arguably our biggest two are also the most stunning - Cordulegaster Boltonii and Anax Imperator.

nice pics its just a shame i cant keep these but i dont want to release them either incase they are not true UK species and cos i dont know what they have come accross in my tank living with tropical fish and inverts
they do get euthanised properly before flushing - i wouldnever release a species that i do not know wether this is its home continent

we've got one flying around the shop at the moment, nice blue and green, we had a load and had to get rid of them due to the fry we have, but some have grown well this one in particular, its too cold outsode so we've let him be a shop pet for the rest if his duration.
