Well... had a morning to myself for a change and... decided to take a trip to the big pet shop for some supplies... which of course means I came home with some new fish (HB female, black tailed female, blonde female, 80's fluorescent-ish male  , and a double sword tail).

So... I'm completely excited about finding a double sword in the mix of pet shop mutts... and I adore his coloring as well.

My question is.... how well do double swords pass on their tails to offspring?

I tried to edit my post but apparently nothing came of it.

I have been told my male is a lyretail not double sword... but... still equally thrilled and hoping it passes on to the next generation!

Did you see that caudal fin pattern in other fish in the tank? I have not seen that particular variation before but it is quite nice looking.

There were a good maybe 100 fish in the tank and absolutely nothing similar to this one. Most were snakeskins/leopards. There were two that weren't and I bought both of them... the one above and this one...

(hoping to mate this one with a blonde to pass on the body color... hope that is a good plan!)

there are 60:40 % of chances. some double swordtail are unbreedable just like the lyretail. what happen is some breeders cross them to normal swordtail for them to breed.

Wait.. but lyretails are unbreedable because of the long gonopodium, but there are some males that have a normal gonopodium and can also breed while having a lyretail.
That double sword seems to have a normal gonopodium.

Also, there are mentions on some websites that lyretails can be crossed with lyretails so it isn't a genetic problem either (even though artificial insemination is mentioned).

it looks like a guppy type or a lyretail hybrid. they are quite common to find now. they are still very pretty though!!

It’s a type or a lyretail. Guppies with long gonopodiums are known as Geissen Guppies. common name ribbon fin guppy only males with normal gonopodiums can breed

Because it’s a a lyretail guppy it do not mean thet they will or have to preduce long gonopodiums , (long gonopodium is a genetic development

Could it possibly be a male guppies or an edler, if it is a sword great find :)

It is definitely not an endler. Not every strange looking guppy is na endler. Very few have any endler background at all.

Im very confused, is the blue fish in the first post a double swordtail, a lyretail swordtail or a lyretail guppy, cos it looks really like the lyretail guppies my sister keeps?!

As far as I'm concerned... if its pretty I like it... can't get my mind around remembering all the names for the different kinds... hence my confusion over what this one was!
