My betta Alpha was a little over a year old when I bought him back in October of 2009. He's now approximately 2 years old. I've noticed that his gorgeous red/purple colouring (see my default pic) has now gained grey spots. They look very similar to his "stress colour" but it's in small spots about 1mm in diameter. He's got 3 right now, one on his dorsal fin, 2 on his anal fin.

I know he isn't stressed. Does this happen to bettas as they get older?

that isnt normal. colouration generally changes on the body, bot the fins. sounds like first signs of columnaris or fungal infection. can you post a pic of these spots. first line of defense-waterchange. do a large one-70% or so and do smaller ones throughout the next week. see if the spots disappear.
i had a solid red VT for years. id be very suspicious of color change on his fins. just doesnt really happen in spots with solid color. youd have noticed change before now. so just be wary. not to scare you. any aquarium salt?
keep us posted.
cheers

no aquarium salt. Tank is 5 gallons, divided, planted, filtered for 25 gallons (a Penguin Bio-Wheel Mini on one side, Elite Stingray 5 on the other). Alpha has the Elite filter, and an airstone for surface movement. Heater is on Chomp's side of the divider as the Bio-wheel filter allows for the heat to be spread more evenly through the divider. The spots aren't growing any larger. They've been there for about 2 weeks. They don't appear to be "3D" off his fins.... Just appear to be part of his colouration. I monitor that tank like a hawk. Tomorrow is waterchange day for the smaller tanks anyway. 20% weekly waterchange (with vac'ing of waste), Tank runs at 79-80F.

He's a chronic tail biter, has been since the day I got him. I've tried EVERYTHING to get him to stop... environment changes, tank size changes, mirrors, extra food, more water movement, less water movement, etc. Nothing worked. His attitude seems to be "Look at me mommy! With short fins I can swim REALLY fast and jump out of the water to irritate you!" and "Haha Mommy! I'm going to chew off my fins and look REALLY ugly the day before someone comes to visit so that they think you're mistreating me!"

the areas where the two spots appeared are in areas that he chewed off and re-grew. He's still eating very well. No changes in behaviour. Still the active boy he always was. The spots are more silver than gray. Almost like it's a ton of the metallic purple colour in one spot. The reflect the light like the purple does.

I'll try to get some pictures tonight, but the tank is a little overgrown (I haven't trimmed the plants in about a month) so it's pretty densely planted. He's got hornwort that has taken over the front region of the tank, some small crypt daughter plants that I'm growing out (everything grows at a nutso rate in that tank thanks to 4.4 watts/gallon of lighting), the java fern in the mid region of the tank, and Hygrophila Polysperma in the back that is so tall that it's broken the surface of the water (and just keeps going!). I'm moving the tank in 2 weeks, so I figured there was no point in trimming and re-scaping if the tank needs to be moved soon. My point is. there's plenty enough space for him to hide. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll manage to "Jar" him (nets dont work, I have to lure him to the surface with food, and then scoop him into a jar to get him out) and get some pictures.

the background info was helpful. if it is in areas of recurring regrowth id say its normal then. i was under a different impression. just keep the water clean and keep an eye out.
cheers
