Does anyone else deliberately but a fish that looks physically handicapped over a healthy looking fish?

I bought a little Bristlenose that has an arched back and a sunken tummy, he eats like a trooper, but his belly is never full, he can easily polish off 2 algae pellets to himself, 3 if the other plec leaves him to it

Do any of you guys or gals go for "special" fish?

Nope I only buy what looks healthy. To me I wouldn't buy a cracked television so I don't buy skeptical looking fish. The hobby is a money hoarder anyway without playing veterinarian to fish that aren't mine.

As long as it wouldn't be contagious to my other fish, then yes I would :) I have one scrawny female betta who must have been the "runt" of her spawn, is an odd shape and has no ventral fins bless her, and no matter how well she eats, always stays skinny.

Hahaha

No. If I am going to invest in a fish, I want it to be healthy. It's like going to buy a brand new 1970 corvette, mint condition, and put a stick of dynamite inside of it. With a lit fuse.

Not worth it.

Sometimes I would wish to rescue a fish I see at the store but I would never buy an unhealthy fish, unless it looked me in the eyes or jumped at me

Get more opinions on this, but your BN could have worms... ;)

I wouldnt intentionally buy an ill or deformed looking fish, I do get given some oddbods though, my latest being the cheekiest oscar ever with a badly deformed mouth.

i used to rescue fish when
i had all my tanks but i also knew
some one that would take the ones
that would grow to big off my hands
and would go to people who had appropriate
tanks for the fish i have taken fish that have
been beaten up picked on and also took ones
that have been ill and got them back to health
thing is when i used to do that i used to find it hard
to let the fish go when people used to say can i buy it
that's why i started of with one tank and ended up with
fourteen and now i only have four and i am NOT GETTING ANY MORE

I haven't previously, but have just got 3 Brochis splendens whose fins were a bit nipped and tatty, felt quite sorry for them so opted to bring them home. They're happily zipping around with the other corys so if they're happy I'm happy :)
As long as the fish are majoritively healthy, a slight deformation wouldn't bother me

this leopard skin discus was going to get rid of as they cannot sell this and the last one.. so i got him.. he is with us for 4/5 months.. same size.. same colour..

very feisty one.. when ther is food time he even defend food from feather fin synos, which is 5 time bigger then him..

its him..

You know I think I would as long as it wouldn't put my other fish in danger. If I was buying say a Betta to go on a tank on his own and I saw one that wasn't ill but was obviously the subject of bad water/treatment with tattered fins etc then I think I would buy it and nurse it back to health. It's just a nice thing to do isn't it if you love fish/any animal :)

I wouldn't buy a sick one and endanger my other fish though.

it would be ok if you had more than
one hospital tank like i used to have

I took home a shubunkin who had a part of his dorsal fin missing (and some flesh so that part wouldnt ever grow back), it looked like something had taken a bite out of it. The guy in the shop accidently caught him when he was trying to catch another two for me, and he was trying to get it back in the tank because it had a defect but i said it didn't matter so we got it free because he wouldn't have been able to sell it. There was nothing wrong with the fish health-wise, and all went in to QT before they were introduced to my pond. They are all growing just as fast as each other :)

at the end of last year and early this year i bread about 5 batchs of cory catfish.i gave lots away to friends and lfs but i noticed one of them had a deformed tail so i kepted him as i thought peaple might not want him because of it.

approx 9 months on he seams fit and well although he is a little smaller than another from the same batch.hes def a fighter as i had high nitrate problems which he survived.hes got character as he strugles to reach the surface when they do the launch to the suface trick.so on the whole im glad i kepted him as i know hes getting best treatment i can give the little fella.whos knows what might of happened if lfs had him.

I know this os a dead topic now, but just letting you all know that my "special" Plec is still with us and is doing great :)
