All this talk of sumps has got me confuzzed, as i have just got a new tank with sump and my good friend at the fish shop says keep the sump empty exept for the heaters and skimmer and pumps so what do you guys thinkDoes a tank absalutley need a sump?

Sumps can have a vriety of uses. Yes they canbe used to house the equipment and nothing more but alot of people can see the benefits of adding further filtration methods in this area. Escecially methods like DSB that can look bad in the main tank (5 inches or more of sand in the tank cuts down on swimming room and makes the viewing far narrower). Also with a DSB in the main tank its posible to introduce cretures that will unblanace the system. Sandsifter starfish are good examples. They will sterilies your DSB in a matter of weeks if you place them in the same area as the DSB... thus the DSB no longer works and you have problems

MM In the main tank would not work as well either as it relies on macro algeas to do the nutrient exportation. A tank full of alges can easily choke corals so again its wise to house this filtration method in a sump. Mangroves also are a great way of nutrient export. Their root would look bad in a reef setup so its again waise to keep them hidded from view.
Adding all these types of filrationunder the tank can only benefit the systen and give a more balanced and stable set of water conditions for the livestock.
Many people (including myself ) use sumps as quarentine areas for troublesome fish (not diseased as the pathogens would obviously pass into the main tank). My Emperor tang became very aggressive recently to my new arrivals so he was caught and placed in the sump for a week whilst my other fish became established. Once he was alloed back into the main tank the fish didnt attack my new fish. If i didnt have the sump to house the tang then I am certain it would have killed my 2 new fish.

so in theory a 170ltr sump is better than a 100ltr sump i.e more water volume
