Do You Think I Should Buy A Ro

hiya all

well been having a think about buying a RO

i heared they get 99% off the water clean & clear from all tap water suppliments. is this true

i was speaking to a breeder the othre night as i bout 4 discus fish off him. he said they brilliant and works out cheaper in the long run although they seem a bit pricey

well i want to get 1 but would like opinions please

i am watching a used 1 on ebay its a RO-Man, but what other will be ok to use for about a price off £40-£60

there are a few new ones on ebay for £55 inc postage but will these be ok or will they be a let down, as for filters aswell were will i get them from, any info will be great

ive never had an RO unit, but just to warn you RO man has gone under, and im not sure about getting suitable replacements, might have to ask around

you will also need trace elements as RO water will not contain any of the good minerals needed

i had a D-D one ( 50gpd) never had any issues with it and spares are readily availible ( RO man has apparently gone under

)

the only reason that i would say deffo dont get one would be if you are on a water meter cos 1 litre of RO = approx 25l of waste

but of course if your not thne go for it, youll get your money back in no time at all

i was told get a RO (any make)

Any once i want to do a full water change, the breeder told me to put 70% RO water in 30% tap water and a small amount off conditioner and that will get the right PH reading back again. not sure if this is true

he said if i add 100% RO water then i will get bad Ph and my fish will die

SO whats the votes so far, yes get 1 or no dont bother

but i am on water meeter. how else can i get similer water as RO. i heard boil it then cool it down and its near as good

hiya truck, i have been using declorinator,

have it got to be the expensive type as i found some in my local wilkosons and its called clorine control - read the bottle and it does the same

or should i just go to my local pet store and buy a big bottle (5 litre i think)for about £18 and it looks a better quailty product

Get a pond declorinator from eBay, it's much cheaper.

If you need the low solids content of an RO, you can get much the same thing by catching rain water. I find that My RO gives me a TDS of a little less than 20 ppm and the rain water that I collect gives me a TDS around 8 ppm. When I mix either one with my 200 ppm plus tap water, it doesn't much matter which one I use for diluting the tap water. If I had a RO/DI, I would expect it to give me even lower TDS readings, but who needs it when you are going to mix in 30% tap water to get the right mineral concentration? I am assuming that you are on the same water system as the person trying to sell you the fish. Those fish are well known as needing very low mineral content water if you are breeding them and raising fry. Although treated tap water will often work for maintaining discus, as Truck suggested, it is not the way to go if you will be rearing fry and breeding the adults.
