I was just woundering..
For me, I've never gotten a really unhearty betta, so usually I just use water thats been dechlorinated.
A couple days ago, when I bought my thrid betta on impuls, I just used water from my 55G.
The rocks had been used before, but had been sitting for like..2 months, so they didn't have any bactiria.
The betta seems in good health, and I've had no problems.

Do you guys usually cycle your bowls/tanks, or just dechlorinate?

I don't cycle my bowls I just rinse the gravel off put it in the tank pour some treated water in thier and sit the bag in the bowl and do the regular things you would do. And one time I ran out of treated water to fill a bowl that I bought on an impulse buy I opened the lid out of my long 20g and dipped the bowl in the tank and filled it up.

hrm. I've been thinking about it, but I'm really too lazy for that ~ all of the % WC's bother me, I prefer doing full changes on tanks that are under 5 gals.

However, in my 12g female community, I will *definitely* do a fish-less cycle first xD

I don't cycle my tanks. I can't be bothered and it's more convenient for me to do 2x 50% water changes weekly.

Yeah, thats what I do

I don't cycle, I don't have filters in them so I can't. They get 100% once a week, the gravel is washed with hot water so there are no bacteria in there :)

LEss than 5 gallons (and some would say 10g) tanks are too small to hold a stable cycle. It is far better to do the frequent large changes.

Above 10g cycling is the way to go, for bettas or any other fish.

It's pretty useless to cycle anything under 5 gallons. You need to change the water 100% on anything less them 5 gallons, so cycling would be futile.

Even if you use a filter on a 1-5 gallon tank...you should still change 1005 of the water, imho.

If you have 5+ gallons and a filter..you should cycle it..it's cheaper on your water bill and easier on you in the long run..they still need water changes though...but that can usually be done during your gravel vac's.

My 22 gallon divided is cycled, my 1 gallons and 2.5 gallons are not.

:grr: that reminds me..my shipment of 1 gallon's haven't arrive yet...I've got like 6 of them coming lol. **runs off to check the tracking number**

I have a 5 gallon and two 4 gallon tanks with my Bettas in and they are definitely cycled.
I do partial water changes each week exactly the same as I do with my large community tanks. I test their water every week when I test the water on the community tanks and my readings are perfect, amonia - 0, nitrite - 0, nitrate 5.
I've had these tanks running for months with no problems so why do people think you can't cycle small tanks? :dunno:

No one said it wasn't possible...it is just not cost or time effective.

You have to do more frequent water changes with smaller tanks, cycled or uncycled..you don't have to do as big or as frequent with larger tanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Mick. :) But one of my bettas, Rio, is really jittery and plummets into stress the moment something is changed in his tank. I think moving him to a separate tank and doing a 100% would stress him so much he would get ill. Plus, I use a gravel vac for water changes on both my betta tanks, so all the gravel gets turned over and cleaned anyway.
