I do not know anything really about individual species of fish. I know what some look like...but am not confident in their care or what there temperaments and characters are like. I do not know which shoal or school or are solitary. I do not know what water conditions they like or feeding them etc

Does anyone on here advocate buying magazines? Are they useful - will I learn useful information as all? I don't like not know what most people are talking about on her

I subscribe to PFK magazine (Practical Fishkeeping) main reason was because I got a free External Filter when I subscribed for 1 year and the Subscription cost less than what the filter was worth so it was a no brainer.

You can find all the info required to keep fish on TFF, so you dont need to buy magazines but its nice to have one about to read if you cant get access to the net :good:

If you are serious about keeping tropical fish start by having a good read through the beginners section, once you get a grasp of the basics most of the more advanced stuff will be easier to understand.

No

Google is my read

Likewise, Google & fishy websites such as this!! Then again, nothing wrong as the more info you read the better for me. A big part of fish keeping is research, research, research!!!

The advantage of the magazines is the information they contain is likely to be more accurate, as on an internet forum it's impossible to tell fact from made up opinion or dogma. Things that go into print and are sold for money generally have to have articles with something to back them up. Whereas on the forum you don't know the reliability of the poster.

I subscribe to PFK - hubby got it as a present as the free gift was good. Not sure what we'll do with a second nano tank though :hyper:

Since I write for magazines, of course I advocate people reading them!

But seriously, the best thing to do is buy a copy of one and see what you think! They're all different, but some, particularly PFK (in the UK) and TFH (in the US) are aimed at enthusiastic beginners and casual hobbyists. So you tend to find articles either about the most popular sorts of tanks and their species (community tanks and reef tanks especially) or else describing groups of fish that the majority of aquarists will encounter in their local tropical fish shops (cichlids, livebearers, etc.). One of the big plusses to magazines is the photography, and so even if you think you know about, say, barbs, a nicely illustrated article will show you species you haven't thought of keeping before, and maybe give you ideas of barbs you could try out some time. Some magazines have an "in the shops" type feature that tells you about new species in the trade, and this is a great way to learn about fish you've never heard of before.

Some other magazines are aimed at more advanced hobbyists. Coral Magazine is one such. Then you have the periodical magazine like the BowTie seasonal magazines about ponds and suchlike, which are more like mini-books than magazines.

It's true the internet has become a place for the exchange of information, and compared to the situation when I started keeping fish in the 80s, magazines are not as obviously essential. But as others have pointed out the quality of writing in magazines is much higher, and you can't really compare reading a piece by, say, Bob Fenner on marine fishkeeping or Ad Konings on cichlids with any random article that just comes up in Google. This isn't to say there isn't some excellent writing online; there are several websites that are not only free but top-notch in quality. But if you're a relative newcomer to the hobby, it's hard to tell the good stuff from the dross.

At least one magazine (TFH) has some articles from the magazine reproduced online in their entirety, so you may want to peruse some of those. PFK sometimes makes content from the magazine available online in the form of articles or blogs. Other magazines may do similarly. Have a read, find one you like, and enjoy!

Cheers, Neale

As much as I enjoy the internet, I still think that there are few things as enjoyable as taking the time to read a professionally prepared magazine. You can expect the articles to be written by people who are experts in their fields and photographs that have been taken by skilled photographers. A good deal for the price you will pay.

Brilliant! From the sounds of it PFK will be my best bet for now. It is hard to 'learn' on the internet as I have no idea what I should be reading about. I may buy a few magazines just so that I have a bit more information plus - nice to sit with a cuppa and a magazine. Staring at the screen for long periods of time can get frustrating!

I guess going back some years magazines were the only way (and books). Just like everything else - yet I sy=till buy the odd craft/ knitting magazine so I may as well add PFK to it!!

I read PFK regularly. Although the internet is a good resource, it's nice to sit down, relax and unwind with a magazine (I find a nice glass of red wine is also useful here). Also I'd say around 90% of the content of each issue will be about things that I would not have thought about researching on the interent - so reading PFK cover to cover increases my knowledge about areas of the hobby I am not familiar with.

.....and gets me a bit tipsy depending on how many glasses of red is consumed during the process.

I have a work laptop for these particular moments.

I don't buy any mags, PFK have a website so i read that.

The problem i find with mags is quite literally half of the pages are adverts, they are worse than the internet! Also, i find them extremely expensive for what they are.
