They are normally off by 0.5-1C but due to the heat sensitive dyes used it gives you a range which shows the most likely temperature and the temp above and below is normally slightly coloured and that intensity you can use to gauge actual temp. I use one on my tank

I use a digital LCD thermometer that was designed for the biorb, it gives a digital reading to the nearest .1

It only cost about £4-£5 from pets at home
