i just went to the pet shop and bought a fish bowl and bought the Siamese fighting fish and then the lady at the counter told me i need a heater and i didnt have enough money so i had to put the fish back and they refunded my money is this true they need a heater or just a scam to get money ?????????????????

Bettas need proper care just like any other fish. A nice sized tank (in my opinion it needs to be at least 3 gallons), filtered, and heated.
Definitely not a scam :)

They need a filter, heater, and 3-5 gallons to swim in, they're tropical fish, they're not coldwater.

+1 bettas need water between 75-80 which unless you have a hot house room temperature won't work. Also they'll need a tank of at least 2.5 gallons the more the better both filtered and heated. If you get a 5 or 10 gallon you could get a few tank mates as well :good:

Finally a fish shop that understands the needs of Betta's. I always get upset when I got to certain fish shops around here and see them swimming around in unfiltered, unheated bowls or tubes. Good on her :good:

P.s. and yes they require a full tropical setup

bettas are hardy fish, but they are tropical fish and still deserve heater, unless you house is 78 degrees Fahrenheit year around and there arent any temperature fluctuations. and they also should be housed in a minimum of 3 gallons even though they do much better in 5 gallons or more. i personally have mine in 5, 15 and 16 gallon tanks.

here is a list of there needs

betta food. pellets are best but flakes are okay too, they also enjoy having live or frozen foods on a weekly basis

3 gallon tank or larger, preferably 5 gallons or larger

a thermometer

a heater

silk or live plants, as plastic will rip there fins

a filter is optional, but it will save you time, and stress. as without a cycled filter you will have to do numerous water changes

a light is optional but most bettas appreciate it

Betta are tropical fish. They will need a heater. A bowl isn't enough room. They will die quickly in a bowl. Get at least a 3 gallon tank, preferablly a 5 gallon.

I don't know what country you're in, but Pets at home have cheap 3.5 gallon cubes that come with a filter, & you can get cheap heaters on eBay.
Bettas like any tropical fish need a heater & filter

I suppose not if you're prepared to do regular water changes.

yes, a filter makes everything easier on you and your betta, as there is less chance of there being ammonia/nitrites with a filter. a having a filter is not an absolute need, but without one you can stress you fish out unless you are willing to do very larger frequent water changes :good:

i got me a bowl from pet essentials and it is about a 1.5 gallon fish bowl i have ordered a heater to fit the bowl and i'm going on a holiday for a week so im going to get the betta after our holiday the selection of betta s i have is a red veil tail a blue veil tail and a redish blueish betta they also have crown tails and orchids but i don't which to choose from they all beautiful lol

im only having the betta fish and the betta s here a quite tiny and in the pet shop they are in filtered heated 0.15 gallon tanks and they are really happy

the betta will do much better in a 3 gallon tank or larger, i got my 5 gallon from walmart for 25 dollars. i think that you should return the 1.5 and get a 3 gallon or larger instead, even though the fish "seem" small they will soon grow to at least 3 inches if they are a long finned fish :good:
good luck with your new betta, hopefully youll get him a bigger tank, and make it better for you and him, as in a 1.5 youll have to do 1 100% and 1 50% water change weekly, even with a filter
