I have the oppitunity to set up a 30L fry tank with no heater. Could the fry be in there without a heater?

all tropical fish need a heater, and this includes their babies. babies are more suscetable to the damage done by a cold tank.

Agreed really. I keep my fry at about 26 degrees and they do fine.

Have a look at Argos. They do a 100 watt heater for £10. I have it in my fry tank and it's fine :)

:good: I have mine set at 22 but it's coming out at about 26 but that's probably because it's only in a small 30 litre tank. Still, it's worth a look compared to some of the prices you see in pet stores :)

You can infect keep platies at much lower temperatures. Their not tropical fish, they classed sun-tropical. meaning they can go from 16-28C and I know people who have collected them from the wild and their has been a frost on the ground on an odd occasion.

While it's best to keep them at around 22C their be happy going down to 18C for 2-3 months at a time. I do this most winters to save on heating costs but it also rests the females from breeding, so you get much healthier fish as a result.
