I got a new supply of Nutrafin NH3/NH4 test kit today, inside the booklet was this note:

WARNING:

This product contains Mercuric Iodine - Do not dispose of test water with domestic waste water.
Instead the test water should be stored in a clean polyethylene plastic container (#2 or #4) safely.
Dispose in dangerous and toxic waste collection point.

Keep waste water container closed, away from heat and children.

I'm sure this wasn't in the last one I had, they must have changed the formula.

A bit more about Mercuric Iodine can be found here
http://www.jmloveridge.com/cosh/Mercuric%20Iodide.pdf

It tells you everything about it and the effects if you add it to water etc.. and how to get rid of it.

Well even though some think it is funny I made further inquiries regarding this, the Environment Agency, Manchester City Health, Domestic Water Company and finally the Trading Standards who are all very concerned and are going to look in to it.

I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill but it is best to be safe than sorry, the warning notice from Nutrafin may be just to cover their backs if a large amount was disposed of perhaps but the matter is now being investigated.

OK moving on:

Hagan say it is 'Overkill' pardon the pun, but that notice is intended for large fish shops plus mainly for the American market where their waste goes in to rivers where as our waste goes to treatment plants, so it is now safe to dispose of down the sink or the toilet, so no worries.

At least I cleared it up in case anyone else is concerned, Hagen say they have had numerous calls about this but there is nothing to worry about.
