Do I Need To Have An Air Stone

I am a newbie and have been reading alot of fish books but none that i have read talk about the use of Air stones.Do i need to use one and do the fish need it? thanx

the only reason people have air stones is to cause some movement to break the surface tension, which allows oxygen into the water.

If you move your filter output nozzle so it creates ripples on the surface, theres no need for an air stone.

Personally I have an air stone because I think it looks nice
