I am setting up a tropical freshwater tank. Do I need a bubbler? You know the little air pumps they sell with the air stone at the end.

They are good to have. They break the surface of the water, air gets trapped which aerates the tank. It also helps to avoid a slick on the surface of the water. If you are using a box filter or a powerhead, they also perform this function. But if you are using some kind of underwater box filter an air stone might be good to have.

I like the sound and the look in the tank...I find it relaxing so I would get one anyway!

You dont need an air stone, its all down to personal preference. If you are worried about oxygen levels in the water then I wouldnt worry. The water movement from your filter should be more than enough providing you properly cycle your tank and arent over stocked.

Yeah i think the filter I have does enough to keep the surface water moving. Good to know cause I have yet to find a good bubbler that does not shake like a jackhammer.

Ha, there are many methods to stop that. Even the "whisper quiet" ones rarely are. I have mine sat on top of a towel, there is even a guy on here that has his strung from the top of the internal cupboard on his tank stand.

As above, if you have good enough surface agitation from your filter its not necessary, but i threw a small one in as a "just in case" effort a few weeks ago when i had issues, and i've not taken it out as the corys like to play in it. Theres no real need for it, other than a toy for some of the more playful fish.

depends on what your using as substrate aswell i had a airstone and pump and when i was using gravel i have the gravel covering the airstone but since i swapped to sand cant really use it as it will just thrown the sand all over the place

they look nice to have

just your personal preference

look into the Tetra APS range they come in a number of sizes i think the biggest size they do is the APS 400 which is suitable for 250L -600L and are really quiet it has rubber feet which absorb the vibration and some sort of "suppression chambers" (There words on the box :p) that absorb sound waves. i have the APS 50 and will recommend it to anybody
