Do I have to have wood for Fred and if so where can I get some if I do?
petsathome usually have some bog wood/mopanit wood etc. or you can find it on ebay etc.
Once you get it, give it a good scrub with a wire brush and put it in a bucket of boiling water (but do not boil the wood itself in water - it degrades faster).
Leave it to soak for a day, then refresh the water (I usually repeat this 4 times).
Now it 'can' go in the tank at this point, but may well develop some harmless (but slightly unsightly) fungus.
If it does, take it back out, give it another quick scrub and put it back (usually sorts it for me).
Cheers!
I am going to get wood for Fred hopefully tomorrow or Sunday, reason I got him was to get rid of brown algae now I feel guilty for not having it for him.YES.
having kept them for a couple of years it is crucial for their heealth and dietry needs..
the well being of my fish comes first, all you have to do is spend a fiver and get a couple of lumps of wood at each end of the tank.
you will see them rasping on it all day,, especially after lights out...
Do not buy the fish if you havent the tank to keep them, wood is a must.
There is debate about it
I love manopi wood in my tank n so do my plecs![]()
Will they eat oak or pine?Pleco Chips are also supposed to contain a fair amount of lignin. They are designed for Plecs' dietary needs.
So if you don't want wood, you could feed them.
But I like the look of wood in a tank, so I have various types of wood with different hardness for my Plecs.
I will try to go to my pet store and see if they have anything for Fred since I have grown so attached to him.Never put pine into a fish tank.
Oak is a hard wood. Most hardwoods work OK in tanks.
Bog wood and cyprus wood are softer tank safe woods Panaques will like.

Tuesday I am going to Petsmart but for right now he is content on eating broccoli with the rest of my fish.oak is too hard for plecs really,
get a few bits of standard bog wood for them as its softer, it will also soften up over time in the tank.
