I am planning on making a DIY hood for my new tank. Would using untreated wood be a particular problem (tank will have a glass condensation try) or should the wood be treated before hand? If so, are the any treatments to avoid / look out for?

Hi....my opinion....the word is 'saltkreep'. I would do anything possible to protect the wood from the salt. To be honest tho', I am not sure what materials would be safe. SH

What about some sort of Marine Varnish that is used to treat wooden boats

I've been advised that waxing / marine varnish is the best plan.

I'm going to go with waxing the wood (inside AND outside) it'll look good, keep the water out and be fairly easy to keep maintained.

wax and marine varnish deffinitly, that and glass or acrylic light covers, protect your stuff.
