Diy Co2 , How To Turn It Off? Does It Hurt Fish/plants If Kept On At N

its kinda dark here, at night 10pm, i changed 50%water and sponge cleaning etc, the killies are excited , so all the males are still in "sexy time" mood chasing and stuff in the dark. girls are hovering on sponge, chilling. co2 dispenser is not disturbed. airstone removed. Morning I am going to add CO2-Drop checker , which was in other tank but of no use as i still dose that tank with liquid.

lets see.

well i have diy c02 with an airstone on a timmer for when the lights go out, i turned my lights out manually when i was introducing new fish, i gradually adjusted the water to the ph of the tank and left the lights out for a few hours while i was out. when i returned i had lost a quarter of my fish and the rest was at the top gasping, so you can definately lose fish with diy c02. unscrewing the cap on the diy c02 is not recommended! as you will ad oxygen to the mix, and the c02 wont start working again untill the culture uses it all up. i would definately add an airstome on a timer for when the lights go out and just leave the diy c02 running. :good:

use the diy c02 just start small and add an airstone at night, you can buy a drop checker for piece of mind, and there are some charts to measure c02 by comparing ph and kh though apparently not all that accurate but still better than nothing! you can try without an airstone just let me know the results as i dont think they will be good! you see it is the plants that use the c02 to photosynthesise and give of oxygen when the lights go out they don't use the c02.

well , I just mentioned in another co2 thread, I do have drop-checker and its gotta get cleaned, tomorrow morning that will be done.

The thing is Airstone is going to cause PH swings as CO2 is disposed off, now i dont want that to stress killies. So i am in real bundle here and wanted some experienced guidance.

there is a real fine balance, i have my airstone turned right down so it just causes a slight surface alligation, as the c02 being left on will also cause a ph swing and also it is very hard to keep a constant ph with diy anyway! the only thing i can suggest is to test the water first thing in the morning and then during the day when the lights have been on for a while. and see if there is any difference in the ph. good luck! :good:

okay, just took video, killies were pissed by lights.

Stopped being lazy and added that Drop checker now.

@blue130, can you check the vid and say the ripples on surface are okayish or not?
