If discus need to have well clean water and good ph with high and wide tanks how
come on saturday when i went to a lfs which has heaps of different discus types
had like 4 med size discus in a 4ft by 2ft by 2ft tank, and besides being a small tank it was not that clean either though the discus looked healthy and were swimming fine, is there a different type of Discus variety which can live in these conditions or not because from all the stuff i hear about them that they are hard and u see them living in a tank that size with about 7 or 6 of them in there.

Because they are there to sell, i bet if he had the tank at home it would be differnt. Dont go by LFS and what they are doing cause there all wrong. They put 10 Red Devils in the same tank as well, but theres no chance you could do that at home.

Yer i know i was looking at the discus and thinking they should nt be living in an enviroment like this they need clean acidic water with high temp or med.

Shops won't always cater for the fishes long term needs to well as they don't expect them to be there to long and normally just want to keep them alive for sale rather than bother with RO water and PH etc. :)

oh ok, cause i saw these people buying some for their son who looked younger then me he was going i want that 1, i was wondering if the people from the lfs told them about the tank requirements otherwise they just wasted about 180 bucks since they brought 3.

I was wondering does anyone know if the bloodpigeons are rare i havent seen 1 at a fish store yet but its 1 of my few dream fish.

My lfs always has several very nice looking blood pigeons. I never looked at the price though...

They're not a particularly rare strain just not as common.

My lfs always gets the pigeon bloods in. I bought one from her and shes got two more in right now.

Pidgeon Bloods aren't rare in Ireland, they may be in your area depending on the supplier.

Some people say that they are hardier than 'normal' coloured Discus, but if your supplier has both pidgeon blood and 'normal' colourations, chances are they are all tank bred and will fare just the same.

Its true that Discus can be sensitive, but they can tolerate a lot of abuse before they die from the stress. The tank bred fish are more hardier than wild caught and can be acclimatised to pretty harsh conditions compared to wild conditions. Its a pretty tough job to do this however, so its best left to more experienced Discus keepers. The best advice I can give is to match your water to the supplier, or find a supplier with the same water as you. Find out how they look after their fish and do the same.

Although a tank may look scuzzy, it could just be poor maintenance of the glass and algae, niether of which will bother the Discus one bit :)

Blood Pigeons are quite common of our way Aussie, they're alse one of the cheapest to buy but not the best strain to breed

:)

ok thanks for all ur advice it should help me. How many years experience do u think u should have with fish before u go buying discus i have made a A4 folder full of infomation about them because i think u have to read and read about them before u go buying them.

there is no set 'experience' needed to keep discus, as long as you are 100% confident in your ability to care for them, and know exactly what they require you should be fine.
