First apologies if this is in the wrong section (wasn't sure if it fitted in here or hardware) :-

Have picked up two 20L tanks, to try to put a hospital tank (in case I need it) and a fry tank together (90% sure I will need it for a swordtail), but I’ll have to make hoods for them and was wondering what is the best distance to have between the surface of the water and any light.

I know it will depend upon intensity of the lights, but dose anyone know a calculation linking water depth and light intensity, or the best distances.

Thanks

Hospital tanks and fry grow outs are usually left without lights or hoods using just clear plastic or sliding glass covers to allow room lighting to get into the tank. The only reason display tanks have lights is to be able to view the fish or grow plants. Lighting in these temporary type tanks will only serve to feed algea.

Cool, good bit of info ... I think i might soon be getting my hands on a few small qt / fry tanks and was wondering about the lighting too :)

Not only so..but most fry don't like it to be too bright. They like dimly lit tanks.
