Hi I have heard alot of different things about housing discus' from 50gallon minimum for a per to 10 gallon per discus. Is any of this right and if not what is the correct housing arrangement for a pair of discus'.

There are people here more qualified to talk about discus but I think that the rules you mentioned are one rule rather than one. So its 55 gallon minimum with a view to 10 gallons per discus so that would be 5 discus in a 55 gallon tank not like 1 discus in 10 gallons or 2 gallons in a 20 gallon etc.

Wills when you refer to gallons do you mean US or UK? Discus sound more affordable already if they only need 55 US gallons to start off with.

55 UK gallons. Its recommended they are to be kept in minimum groups of 5 with a minimum of 10 gallons per adult fish.

OK then how about the tank size for silver dollars and how many of those should you keep together.

Ok good because keeping silver dollars and Discus are two extremes  . Silver dollars are best kept in small shoals of 4 or more

Be aware that a silver dollar adult is quite a bit larger than a discus adult. They run to about 6 inches or a bit more each.

Silver dollars get over 8" long
If you look at the 15 post in this thread theres a pic of nellys 9" silver dollar.

Typically not quite that big Kizno, but there are always exceptionally large examples of any fish. Thanks for the perspective. I was just trying to warn about a typical size.

What size is your tank CommunityKeeper? Its better to match a fish to your tank than try and squeeze them in.

Yh i know they dont normally get that big just showing that they can potentially get very large :good:

So we're looking at around a 250litre tank initially to keep discus?

Out of curiosity how much do discus sell where you are (everyone who is reading)?

I recently found them from £35 way up to £85 each.

They sell for £7.50 up to £85. depending on size and strain.

Thats what they say. Although you can keep discus as all fish in grow out tanks and move them as necessary.
