well im getting my moms old 27 gallon tank and i was wondering if you could fit some discus in there???????
anyway can someone give me some info on like good strains and bad...or like how to take care of them and breed them...

Thanks everyone

Garett

Hi Garett,

unfortunately a 27g is too small for anything but a proven breeding pair. You are looking at at least 200 dollars for the pair, normally around 300-400 though.

Depending on where you live I believe a member Poconoboss was selling a pair for a good price.

Pair was sold sorry.

k thanku!

I was just gonna get two discus at my LFS..but i just dont like their strain there carrying right now..i think their wilds and i dont really want wild...

I want a pair of red leopard snakeskins for a cheap price...ill just have to wait until my LFS gets a nice strain...

I think they have some dark blue discus too....

whats an easy strain to breed and take care of?

When I say pair, I mean a bonded breeding pair, not just any two Discus. As far as keeping and breeding them, they are all very similar. Pigeon Blood based Discus tend to be a little more out going then some other strains, but from what I have seen personally, they tend to be more suseptible to internal parasites (maybe this is just my luck.)

Hi Balloons&Killies

As DiscusKeeper has said, you should only really be keeping a mated pair in that size of a tank. This is because Discus can be aggressive during feeding times and just during everyday stuff.

I have a 50gal and have seen this firsthand with my discus, i purchased 2 red turqs and placed them in the tank with 4 albino cats and 2 BN's and one is always pecking, charging and generally annoying the other. It isn't so bad and the other fish gets his fair share of food and space etc but with a couple of more moodier discus it could present a problem as some discus become territorial during feeding and can stop the other discus from feeding, eventually becoming stressed, sick.. and eventually die.

All of the above is not a problem with a mated pair as they wont hurt each other and will most likely breed for your if you can get everything right.

I am aiming for 4 discus as a mimum in my 50 gallon tank with #4 coming this week in the form of a blue turq to add to my 2 red turqs and red dragon.

As far as strains go i wouldnt have a clue, there are so many colours and strains etc.

Good luck and if you need any additional info dont hesitate to post, all the discus keepers here so far have been more than approachable regarding advice =-)

Ive seen pairs on aquabid for and they look nice but their like $250

could you maybe find me a breeder with cheaper discus??based in canada or that will ship to canada?

Please

Thanks

Garett

If thats a breeding pair thats VERY cheap...

i saw a breeding pair of checkerboards over here in the UK a few weeks ago for £270 which is about $450.

Dont know what the prices are like in the US regards breeding pairs of discus but wow i wish i lived in the US, id snap that guys have off =-)

Haha;)

Thats funny! At my LFS the discus looks almost mature with a few small ones
There mixed wilds and normal ones together and there only 55$ for each but if they grow a bit more in that tank maybe 2 will pair up and ill get a pair for 110$

I suppose you can try but to get a male and female and having them pair off naturally is a long shot especially with discus.

If i were in the position your in i would take my time, save up for a grade A pair and spend the money on them, that way there are no issues with agression and you know they'll fit OK into your tank, you never know, you might even make your money back with the babies. But thats an investment and effort in itself =-)

haha thanks again!

How much would discus fry sell for anyway?

And i want to buy some
on aquabid but its hard to find them that ship to canada...

But in my LFS they have wilds and normal 1s in the tank together so maybe they just pair of in that tank and ill buy from there.

You can always contact your LFS and see if they can order you in breeding pairs. I see your in Alberta, I work at Pisces and I know we have ordered in breeding pairs in the past for people. Well priced too, if I remember correctly $250 for a pair of Pigeons. If you talk to April in Vancouver (Discus importer) she may be able to import your a breeding pair, might get pricey though. If you are seriously thinking about breeding to produce and sell fry, you will need to invest in a 55 gallon grow out and in most cases an R/O unit to start (depending on your TDS.)

ok thanks!

Ya here in medicine hat the only place to get discus is animal world...ill se if i can special order discus in at petland but you probibly cant...but you never know.....

I am not sure you will get very good quality ordering from Petland, it might be worth a trip up to Calgary or even getting something shipped in.

Yep always better to have a bigger tank, means a bigger group, with the different colours you can get the tank will look gorgeous.

I just put up a discus piccies thread in the journals and photo's bit here so take a look at my red dragon and red turq, once the turq colours up itll be a very nice contrast.

Have a blue turq in QT at the moment while it grows on so thatll be nice also.

I would seriously recommend a bigger group of fish, its just nicer to look at =-)
