Hello, I bought a new red turq discus the other day and I was watching her behaviour this afternoon. She is hanging out with Russell my pearl pigeion and they are both 'pecking' at my filter tube and shaking back and fowards at each other. Is this a mating sign!?! Its not territorial because they arnt chasing each other off and wont leave each others sides.....AM I GOING TO GET BABY DISCUS!? :D
Yikes! Im not going to be prepared if they start laying eggs! But at the same time Im really excited, Ive never owned fish that have spawned yet....and this will be really special if I get discus! What do you all think my chances are? Is this a sign they are going to get 'freaky tonight' haha

:D Congratulation, yes thats a sign they had been married hehehe.... but your responsibility getting more too, because u must keep your water condition constant for at least a week.

Oh exciting!!!! Do I need to do anything? Such as a water change in preperation? Or just do my 25% weekly water change sunday as normal :p
I'll let you know how they go! So the 'kissing' of the filter tube, does this mean they will lay on this? Or is this just something silly they do....
PS: the discus in your avatar is beautiful!

I think the pecking means there gonna lay the eggs right there

Also if u have any more fish from the tank I suggest u take them out! they get pretty nasty when guarding eggs and maybe even fry. ;)

Yes, that is the mating dance. They are cleaning the area which they will lay there eggs.
Good luck.

Discus lay their eggs in the evening. Mine usually starts lay eggs around 8:00PM just before the tank lights go out. It's neat to watch them make their passes. The female laying the eggs, and then the male fertilizing them.

Hopefully they will have another try tonight, it was around 7-8 last night that they were courting each other, as you say, before I turn off the lights and after their dinner.....fingers crossed!

Hey, you are so right!
They are at it again, doing their little shaky shaky and cleaning the filter tube....I just fed them and now they are behind the driftwood dancing around again...Id normally turn the lights off in an hour or so....(its 8.00 now)
now all they need to work out is how to actually 'do the deed' haha enough of this showing off stuff!

Sometimes they will dance and clean a surface for a few days before they actually lay the eggs.

Speaking of laying eggs, my discus did that last night. Right around 8:00.
