hello,
just a quick question on what fish i can keep with discus?
could i keep them in my community tank which consists of angels, bala's, guorami's and clown loach with a few bottom feeders.
thanks,
nath1 :good:

thanks will.
does anybody else have views the same or different to this!
what other fish can i add to my tank that will inject a bit of colour to it?
i recently lost a 14" common plec who has left a hole waiting to be filled, and thought a couple of discus would look good.
thanks,
nath1 :good:

fiskkeeperpro is right, the Bala are way too active/quick for the Discus.

Depending on the tank size, and the type of fish, some of those other guys could cause problems too! Sorry!

If you ask these questions, it means you still need to research on these fish. They are quite expensive, and loads of people have problems with them because they don't know how to properly care for the lil' fellas.

I'm a pretty experienced fishkeepers.. dont venture in this forum anymore but... discus are ALOT of work dont get me wrong. If your a pretty experienced fish keeper wanting to get into a more experienced fish then discus may be fore you.

I was gung hoe about getting some for myself... but found out after days and days of reading that maybe they arnt for me yet.... not at this time.. they require so much.. time honestly.

These discus are very very... picky fish, water must be very sanitary... like we're talking more then any other fish you know. Daily water changes, making food with beafhearts.. making it yourself.... these fish need variety in there diet, so diff food every day.. .AND they have very small stomachs so they need to be fed like 4 portions a day.. cleaning up after they are done.. uneaten food so it does not contaminte there water.

Believe it or not they are so much work most people keep them in bare bottom tanks, so they can siphon after each meal. Too much work for me buddy, and these fish getting in excess of 50$ a fish and you need at least 5 cause they like to be in groupds... is getting expensive :)

KEep reading.. maybe could be for you

Have a read of other discus threads first. You should really have 5 or 6 discus to stop them fighting, and therefore a large tank with good filtration etc. Also the temperature needs to be up at around 30C.

Tetras seem to be popular companions, and we also have a couple of Clown Loaches and a bunch of Albino Plecs. Opinion varies though on whats best.

thanks guys!!!
maybe discus aren't the fish, so now the question is - what new fish to introduce to my community tank to introduce colour and be able to cope with the big boys?
a fish that really stands out that will be o.k in a 5 foot tank (450 ltrs)

I disagree when I first kept discus I was over sensitive with them with feeding and water changes etc and they suffered for that

When i FINALLY GOT USED TO THEM AND ADA SETTLED TANK WITH 8 in they thrived and spawned regularly and I found them to be very boisterous and hand tame within their group. I had clown loaches rummy noses and a Black Ghost Knife in their and they'd be very bolshy at feeding time... I also just changed water like I do now on a regular basis and again they were fine. Go for it if you want them but I wouldn't buy very young discus
