OK i can get rid of the platy, my cousin would probably want them. I can go with the following.

4-6 discus
2 angelfish
6 gourami

What kind of gourami though? Unless you get dwarf /honey /other small types, you're still going to have probs with the water quality for the discus. Platy are so much smaller than many types of gourami, they are not so much the problem in terms of space /water quality.

Annka I did write the type of gourami I was going to have.

Firered Gourami (Dwarf)

I went to the lfs today to replace my heater and have decided the I am going to get these Tangerine Discus. They are a decent size, around 2 inches and I am getting a good deal on them. I will keep the 6 gourami I said i was keeping and will pair up the angel. I just need to learn on how to sex them to get a pair. Thanks alot guys.

demonmagus - neons will be eaten, but the rest of it sounds alright

:good:

no they wont. I have a school of small cardinals in with my discus and they do fine. I also have a friend who has a 5 ft tank with several adult discus and a school on cardinals ad a school of neons and they are all fine.

i said neons not cardianals though.

neons are a wild angelfish's natural food.

what's your stocking going to be in the end now then?

:good:

6 gourami
2 angelfish
6 discus
maybe a small school of cardinal

Ok thanks alot guys, I just have a couple more questions.

Is it true that you can not add carbon into the filter bags?????????

Is 25% water changes a week good enough for the discus??????

I have a local breeder selling the discus for $15 but for small ones, is it worth it?????????? EDIT: Small ones meaning 1 month old.

If you mean is it true not to use Carbon in the filter with discus... i would say no to that. I have carbon in my fluval with no problems

do 40% weekly water changes... i personally do 50, but thats just me LOL

Shop around mate... but if you trust the breeder and he is willing to chat with you about them then do with him. He will stand you in good stead should you need any urgent info. Also, check that he isnt rearing the young in RO otherwise you would have problems.

Hope that helps :)

about the water changes, some keepers do 10% a DAY, many just do 50% a week.

Apparently carbon does something to discus that isn't good

Thanks for the reply, and i did read something about carbon not being good for the discus but it wasn't specefic about what is so bad. My local lfs who is a great help to me, has 2-3 inch tangerine discus just starting to get color. I think thats the way i go because the other breeder breeds the fish off R/O water.

My last question is, im up in michigan, so we get good tap water, so would it be ok just to add water straight from tap and add a little tap water conditioner?

thanks alot guys..

Hey guys, I got my 4 tangerine discus in and they were shy at first but are getting accustomed to the tank. They havn't ate too much and I can take any tips on feeding. My mollies and platy should be all gone by sunday night because my cousin is picking them up. I will try and get some pics in soon.

good to hear you managed to get some Fadi. I feed mine on a mixture of live adult brine shrimp, prima and bloodworm. They may take a couple of days before they eat so be paitent with them and if you try feed and they dont touch it, remember to remove the un-eaten food.

Get some pics up for us as well !! ;)
