Hi.

First off Oscars are far too messy and create loads of waste playing havoc with your nitrite and nitrate levels and discus need near perfect water to survive in.

Secondly the oscar would kick the crap out of a discus and then probably eat the mush of it. I'm suprised Sam didn't tell you that being the big cichlid keeper he/she is.

No offence meant to you Sam but seriously, an oscar and a discus? It's like trying to keep a rat with a snake.

Have another think about what else you could keep with your discus or do as you yourself suggested and split them into seperate tanks. As long as the oscar tank's large you won't ahve a problem keeping him or her on their own.

Cheers, Good Luck!

I would try and find out why you lost 5 out of the 6 Discus. Are you aware of their requirements? The fact that your asking if you can keep an Oscar with them suggests you maybe haven't done as much research as you could have.

You need to find out what happened and then decide what to do. If you want to keep Discus they should be in groups so you'll need to buy more, if not you'll need to find for your lone Discus a new home. Maybe if you post up your water parameters, age/size of Discus, tank mates, tank setup, feeding/maintenance routine we can offer some help?

I agree with kev; if you don't want discus, then you need to rehome the sole survivor as they are very unhappy when kept without other discus. That way, you could get an oscar - as everyone has said, discus and oscars really really don't mix.

lol, easy and simple oscars and discus dont mix

how did you get that sam wanted them to be kept together when he said

"oscars are too big, messy and well.... jus like oscars for discus.

the discus would probably spend there time hiding in the corner"

nothing in their says go for it. :) maybe just an error in reading?

In a 4 x 18 x 18, you'd probably only manage one oscar on it's own. At a push. Stick with the discus, they're prettier, smaller, and probably dont poo as much :hey:
