long story short - I put in sand... The filter was fine for 2 days.

I went out of town. The filter stopped.

I have now lost an eel, and my twig catfish (but the twig cat looked like something tried to eat him)

I also have a discus with white grainy stuff all over him, and an eel with white fluffy stuff all over. The discus still moves fine, but the eel doesn't and is on its deathbead. They're in the 10g hospital right now. the eel was fine this morning but is horrible now.

A: what can I do to improve on the 38 gallon condition?
B: What can I do for my near dead eel and my discus?

I'm fairly sure my cycling restarted when the filter was off for 2 days, so should I try chemichals to stop ammonia, or would that be even worse for my eels and syno. cat?

Sounds like the filter got blogged up if you didn't let the sand settle before turning the filter on.
What are your stats now in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Slimey grey skin can result from bad water quality.
Fluff on fish can go if you do water changes don't always need meds.
Increase aeration now in the main tank and the hospital tank.

I'm sorry, I really don't know the ph/ammonia.

The 10 gallon is fully cycled and has been running fine. Planted. The eel is upside down. I don't think he'll make it. The 38 is planted also. I've set both filters on full to help maximum airation.

And yeah, the sand didn;'t settle, but it did before I left.... should have been okay...

Don't know much about eels but being upside down isn't a good sign at all, i would be prepared to lose him.
For the other fish add a bacterial med for the fluff but not while the eel is still alive as he's not coping as it is.

the eel is the only one with the fluff.

It appears to me the discus has itch.

Unfortunatly, the eel has passed away already. He was fine this morning.... something must be terribly wrong with the main tank...

Or bless him. R.I.P.
Whitespot or ick looks like grains of salt on a fish.

okay. so I've lost both the discus and eel now.
The discus had grain - like white sports.
The eel had white fluff all over...

I came home today and my Discus had the same white fluff as the eel I put in did, and is now dead.

Ph in the 38 gallon - 7.0 to 7.5 looks more like 7.0
ammonia - the test will be done in 15 minutes...

Whitespot can cause bacterial infection on top.
Are the fish in the main tank , flicking and rubbing on objects, any signs of increased breathing.
What your tap ph as ammonia reading can alter ph and other stats.

only my second eel (which i hadn;t seen for 3 days) Is showing the sign of inscreased breathing, and isn't keeping the best posture either. No one shows signs of flicking and so on yet either. and I see no white grains on them.

edit:

It would appear my glow-lite tetra does have white grain like things on it.

ammonia is at .1

Is that ammonia reading 01, or higher.
I would medicate the tank for whitespot then, read instructions as you have a eel in there.
Increase temp to 30 and also aeration as the med and high temp reduce 02 in the tank.

I'm sorry, I really don't know the ph/ammonia

And you have discus in your tank

Discus will not tolerate increased levels of ammonia/nitrates.

Treat the whitespot, plenty of water changes. Try to do 20% every day and syphon the gravel/sand.

You need to get some water testing kits asap.

Remember the old saying...you don't keep the discus, you keep the water :good:

0.1, decimal.

and I dislike the "keep the water" phrase for two reasons

A: you still design the hiding, plants, and so on
b: you provide the food, the water usually does not.

Thats ok then not to drastic, do a water change before you add the med, good luck.

Sorry but I have to disagree, I think the water is the most important issue when keeping discus :)

Here's a piccy of 5 of my babies.
