Disaster Averted.

After my weekly water change i went to plug my filter (fluval u2) and heater back in
and the filter would no start. i thought it could be the fuse so changed it still nothing,
i then took it to pieces but still nothing it turns out that the impeller was blocked with
something not sure what but after spinning it by hand it started fine. Has any one else
had this problem or is it just a one off?

I've had that problem on the fluval 1 (well the one below the 2 anyway). Dont know what it was; causing it but it worked after a quick nudge

I had a similar crisis of my own on Thursday morning...

Went to open the overnight lid covering of the 100l plastic tub, home to my Persian Killifish and male Lionhead Cichlid, to find that the Juwel filter pump was doing nothing! It was such a relief to see the fish moving around and alive, as this situation is still my worst fish nightmare if anything ever happened to the power going down to my 540l in the garage.

The crazy thing was that after discovering my Koralia powerhead had a limescale build-up, cleaned off with vinegar and some gentle scrubbing, I cleaned all the impeller cavities of my small filters and had they all running nicely at the beginning of the week. I gave the problem one another clean and thankfully its been fine since, but boy was I worried that some of my fish had technically suffocated from lack of oxygen!

My Fluval 2 did that when it was getting old. I eventually had to replace it because the suction was non-existant. A year after I started having to manually prod the propeller it died.

Had problems with all my filters on occasion after cleaning, different makes and sies not just Fluval. Sometimes it takes a while to get them going again, while I worry about the fish. I've found that a good hard tap on worksurface is often what's needed.Begining to dread weekly water changes because of this

yeah had the same prob last year. impeller stuck causeing the moter to heat my tank up rushed out bought a new filter before i checked the old one and after a clean the old one worked fine

The same thing happened to me on my Fluval U3, some dead Vallis leaves got stuck in the propeller

this quite common problem
i find that when you clean
the sponges in old tank water
also give the impeller a quick
rinse around and have a quick
inspection just to make sure all is OK
you could even give it a quick
clean with some kitchen roll
but make sure it is submerged
before you switch on i used to use
a test tube cleaning brush

i have had this problem with my ehiem wet dry system, its a nightmare, the way i sorted it out was the strip it down and hold it upside down then it started so the i re put it back together again and hey presto it works fine,

oop's expensive, my wife would go mad if i done that
