I would suggest a combination filter floss and reduce the hours of light. The floss should pick up any spores & particles of algae and the reduced light will control growth. I will also second karrihugs suggestion about switching lights off & on.

I just added filter fiber (floss) to my Emperor 400. It seems the cartridges weren't picking up the real fine (small) particles. The filter floss picks the rest of it up and the water is crystal clear.
