Fish Gatherer
Hi,
I’ve noticed recently that one of my fish tanks each week is getting really dirty (i.e. that it needs cleaning rather than looking cloudy). Plus a small (20-30% water change) will not do it until the following week. I can’t do a 100% water change every week (which is what it is requiring to look clean). I did a 100% tank clean 13 days ago; 5 days ago I did a 20-30% water change and the tank is now looking so dirty that I’m so tempted to do another 100% change. The trouble is I don’t have the time to do a 100% change each week; plus I’m hoping to move house and the house has a water meter; so I won’t be able to afford to be changing that much water each week.
This specific tank has been set up for 18+ months, the occupants are goldfish (I am aware everyone will come back and say they are messy – I know that I’ve had them for years) but the problem has only happened the last few months.
The tank is an Aqua one 850.
What could be the problem? Do I need a new power head, or filter media? (filter media as standard is ceramic noodles, sponge and carbon stuff – I’ve removed the carbon stuff at the minute as I’m putting medicine in the tank, the ceramic noodles in my opinion look ok; but then this is the first time I’ve had them and the sponge looks in absolutely fine).
Another thing I’ve noticed is I have lots of aphids in the filter; which is majorly annoying; I had them in the filter unit of another tank (also cold water), the only way I got rid of them was to change the filter completely. Could this be an effect of the “dirty tank” or could they be contributing to the “dirty tank” – also is there any way to get rid of them because there are lots of them .
I am now tempted to get rid of the fish; dry the tank out completely and then start over in a few months again
