Difference Between Sae And False Sae?

I quite fancy some siamese algae eaters but my lfs has what I think may be false ones labelled up wrong.

Any info appreciated.

a true SAE will have a jagged edge to the stripe running down the side of the body, also the stripe will continue into the tail. a false SAE will have a golden stripe above the black stripe and it will be very smooth not jagged and it doesnt go into the tail fin, my false SAE also had very nice rainbow patterned fins and a true SAE should have clear or milky coloured fins. also a true SAE will have 2 barbels.
where are you based as i have 1 for sale if interested...? its about 3 inches long at the minute, i removed it as it just chased my other one too much stressing it out too much. so get either 1 or a group of 3/4

In my experience the flying fox and the CAE get mixed up a lot. as juveniles they look really similar but the CAE (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) gets pretty large (4-6 inches) and can be really violent and territorial where as the flying fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus) stays pretty small and lives best in groups.

For telling them apart, the FF's lateral stripe continues all the way into the tail, the CAE's does not.

I'm not 100% on that info but I'm reasonably sure of it. This being said, I've never kept them myself but I've been told this by others who have.

both species are related as are false sae and all are best in groups or singular as they can become teritorial. my sae's chased but did no damage just stressed each other out....

Ahhh... I'm a fool. You were asking about the SAE, I was commenting on the CAE and the FF. sorry about that.
