I know he's not a tropical fish but I need a quick response. Help please!!! Watson, my hill stream loach is in trouble. I found him On the bottom of the tank (e is never on the bottom, always on the sides or the filter) on his back. The other fish were pushing him but not biting him. I have seperated him and put an algae tablet and a pea right next to him but he has just rolled over onto his back again and is gasping. All tank perameters are normal, ph 6.8 (same as our tap water), amm, nitrite 0, nitrate 10. No new tank makes for about 2 weeks. No other ill fish. If he dies this will be the 3rd hill stream loach we have lost for no apparent reason in a perfectly cycled, clean healthy tank.

He has no signs of illness, no redness, spots anything. How can I help him!!!

Once fish lay on there back they rarely make it.
Does he look pale or darker in colour.
Does he look bloated.
What does it look like when he goes to the toilet.
Can he maintain his balance in the water.

He looks darker than usual, I rarely see him go to the toilet as he is usually tucked away somewhere, normally it is short thick dark green stools. I have tried to right him and he flipped back over. He keeps jerking, it half looks like he's trying to swim/ half looks like he's having a fit. I just wish there was something I could do to help :(

It sounds like he's dying bless him.
If you could issolate him you could try a bacterial med but to be honest it sounds to late.
Fish can heavy breath with bacterial infections.

I've isolated him to stop the others harrassing him. Would you believe it I have a plethora of meds due in the post any day now and the pet shops will all be shut so I can't run and get any :'( He was perfectly fine when the I got up at 7! I noticed him acting a little strange about 12 and now...

How long have you had him.

Just under a year I believe. As I said we have lost two others. All three were bought from p@h in the days before I knew better. I have never lost any other fish. When I asked the guys in p@h about the others their response was along the lines of "yeah they tend to do that". But from what I've seen online they are supposed to be fairly hardy!

Ok.
it could be a number of reason. Without symtoms it hard to say.
Is he still fitting.
Keep a look out for when your other fish go to the toilet.

He is now in a very large bucket with totally fresh fresh dechlorinated and we have managed to get him upright. He seems to have stopped fitting though I'm not convinced thats a good sign. I just can't understand why it's this particular species of fish we are having trouble with :( Poor little guy. Thanks for replying.

See if you can shed more light on the problem by posting in the right part of the forum.
Never kept hill stream loaches so don't know much about them.

I read your thread in the coldwater section. Bless Him. R.I.P.
