So I transferred my betta to his new tank today...I thought he would be extremely happy to get out of his bowl but he looks incredibly stressed out right now...he has been in there for only about 5 minutes....did I just kill him? What do I do?

Silly question I no but was the new tank cycled, tanks same temps? Did you slowly transfer? Lights on the tank off? Anything that could stress the fish.

possibly not used to having any water flow at all...

did u just put him from one tank to another?? or bag him and acclimatise him with lights off?

this is the part of the hobby i hate.. its a huuuge learning curve chick, dont beat yourself up xxxx

Not cycled, brand new tank...I'm doing a fish in cycle... don't worry I know how this goes....lots and lots and lots of water changes... came from a bowl so I wasn't too worried about the cycling part.

Lights are off

I feel aweful....no as a little airhead I didn't acclimate him...I know it doesn't make much of a difference but the temperature difference between the bowl and tank wasn't much....I can't believe I did that! I've been doing this for years! :(

For once the crappiness of the top fin "power" filter payed off because there is almost zero water flow...I made sure to get one like that...

I put all of his old decorations in there for a little familiarity, and will put in the wood and live plants later.

Temp is about 73F
I will test the water right now then post up the parameters...

It looks like he has calmed down a bit, he is just sitting on the sand (like he used to sit on his gravel in his bowl) but i don't want him jut to sit there on the bottom al, the time in this new tank :/ and he still doesn't look very happy :(

Thank you so much for all of your speedy replies

Hopefully he'll be ok, may just take him a while to adjust to the new tank.
Lights off & leave him be for a couple of hours

I think he's probably just stressing himself because it is basically a new territory for him. He doesn't yet know that it is his, and that there are no dangers for him there. Are there any plants and hiding places in his new tank? It will make him feel more secure.
Leaving the lights off and keeping things calm around him will help him feel less stressed.

Rummy nose, I don't have any hiding places in there....is there anything I can put in there on short notice that I might have laying around the house?

You have kind of answered the question there really by saying you put the fish straight in. Looks like you going to be very busy in the near future with water changes and keeping a check on the stressed fish.

A large mug would do as a temporary hiding place.
Make sure it's well rinsed before putting it in though

A coffe mug, as long as it's big enough for him to turn around in

When I transferred our Betta from his 5 gallon (he came with it, got him second hand) into his 10 gallon he too did not seem too happy at first, it took him about a week to settle in there, and he had his decoration from his 5 gallon with him plus all the plants I had in the 10 gallon.
Is he at all swimming about looking around or is he just hovering somewhere?
