Did I Get Sick From Bio-support?

I'm guessing that the loophole lies in the way that they are stored and for how long they are stored. These products would work exceptionally if they could guarantee that they were only on the shelves for a short time. After a very short period of time (weeks), if the bottles have not been refrigerated, the bacteria will have used up all of the nutrients that they need to survive. When refrigerated, the bacteria slow down consuming less ammonia, and have a longer shelf-life. When you consider that most shops buy from a distributor and not direct from the manufacturer, there is no telling how long they have been sitting in a hot warehouse.

well all i know is that the when i went to sleep the night that i set up my aquarium and added that bio-support liquid that claims to have 300 million live bacteria per spoonful, and probably got it on my hands.. i woke up mid night out of a good sleep and puked, that came out of nowhere.. woke up the next morning and could not sleep on my sides or stomach without getting sick.. had to sleep on my back. only way my stomach would stay somewhat settled.. then got up around 9, puked alot of liquid.. pissed the yellowest urine ive ever seen, then stayed in bed the entire day with a nasty stomach and a wicked bad head ache..

and trust me when i say to you all that i rarely ever get sick.. i cant remember the last time ive got sick. And this doesnt seem like a normal sick either.. this honestly feels like my body is trying to get rid of somthing. im wondering if i should just go to the doctor already, but if doctors around here are anything like the ones where your all from, im sure you'll all agree it would have to get quite a bit worse for them to get any sort of idea whats going on with me. I feel way better yesterday and today, but my stomach will still wrench ever hour or so, and my head is still throbbing.

But by trading standards any product sold before it's use by/best before date has to contain what it claims and do what it is intended to do.
I'm not saying it doesor doesn't do x, y or z; just pointing out that there are laws in the UK which prevent the sale of products that basically "lie" on the packaging.

But does an aquarium additive by law have to have a use by/best before statement?

yes is my answer to no soup, but just kai, it states in the article that the additives are only of any use in a fish-in cycle but not in a fishless cycle which the OP is going for i hope

Wow, you guys must have much stricter laws across the pond.

our laws are ironic, a person that is renowned for being bad gets away with everything but someone that does something by accident or for the first time gets like 3 life sentences

i think your body is just getting 'rid' of something its not used to.

off the cuff - JPL Denitrol has an expiry date

Sounds like a stomach virus to me...urine gets yellower when you're dehydrated, as vomiting will tend to do. I wouldn't worry...whatever it is, you are feeling better!

Thank you Sharon, my thread kinda got jacked here, lol. I'm not too concerned, my only issue is that i can't remember the last time i've got sick. i actually have a condition that makes my immune system super strong, so this has kinda freaked me out.

Very cute picture by the way.

Apologies
Although, to your original post - I have to agree with Truckasaurus and Sharon, either the fluid upset your stomach (always remember to wash hands after plunging into the aquarium) or you coincidentally picked up a stomach bug and there has been one doing the rounds since mid November.
At least you're feeling better :good:

just my 2cents, but how many of us suck our syphons to start them up? We would all be moving into the hospitals if our fish were really dangerous to our health. Now this may sound strange, but your stomach will get used to it ^_^

For the sickness, well, you've already said you didn't wash your hands after setting up the tank, before eating so theres any number of bacteria you could have injested that way, but also what were you doing before you setup the tank? There are numerous places / activities that could have meant that you got something 'unwated' in your stomach, so your body has a good clear out. the way I see it you missed two important points:

1) Wash your hands after dealing with the tank, anything to do with the tank, medications, treatments etc.
2) Wash your hands before eating

Thats 2 oppurtunities that you missed, when you should have washed, so perhaps just "bad luck", and use this as a reminder to wash your hands next time! - lol

Get well soon :)

As for the bacteria in a bottle, and manufacturers lying, there is already a link above to the previous dicussion, but in summary;

Manufacturers aren't lying, there IS bacteria in the bottle, just not the bacteria you are expecting. There isn't A-Bacs (Ammonia converting), or N-Bacs (NitrIte converting), as has already been established, they can't survive in the bottle.
What is 'apparently' in the bottle is bacteria that will breakdown food / plant waste into ammonia. Therefore this bacteria DOES aid the Nitrogen cycle, just at a stage earlier than anyone fishless cycling normally looks. Of course if you are fishless cycling a tank with no plants there will be very little for this bacteria to work on, hence no 'acceleration' of the cycle. If you are doing a fish-in cycle then this product will help to convert the left over food, fish waste etc to ammonia faster than would normally happen to start the cycle, (but for a group that are so paranoid of the ammonia levels when fishless cycling is producing more of it, at a faster rate something we really want to be doing?).
I was 'caught' in the trap of buying this stuff, and the first time I felt sure it had speeded up my cycle, but that was on a tank with plants in it, and old tank gravel, (been dry for about 10 years, but still full of various organic bits), so perhaps it worked on that a bit. On my most recent tank I added it and it really doesn't seem to have made a difference, but that is using 'virgin' gravel, 'virgin' ornaments, and no live plants (yet).
