Does really play a big role in the growth of diatoms? I have my lights on for 6 hrs. and diatoms are still growing. So if I increased the photoperiod of my lights would that really make a difference?

No, not always. Or, another type of algae might appear. Intensity of the light is one factor, and then there is duration. These are obviously related, but either can cause diatoms or other algae problems.

You had another thread on diatoms, and I and others posted, leaving some questions.
