Got my shipment of new discus today to replace my lost pair of red melons. 2 Cobalts and 2 Chequerboard Pigeons, but......... and theres always a but........!

One of them has a deformed mouth area - looks pushed to one side though appears to be breathing and swimming around fine. Gills on both sides seem to be operating as normal so initially no concerns about health though have to wait for him to settle and see if he feeds ok.

My first thought was maybe some kind of dislocation in travel so I tried gently massaging to relocate but no joy. The fish were from Chens so I'm sure wasn't raised like this. He's in the main tank so won't be used for breeding should it be some kind of deformity so no point in culling unless there is deterioration in his well being.

Any suggestions or ideas (apart from me checking the fish on reciept - no criticism of chens though must add). Will try and get a pic up once he's a bit more settled and out and about.

Take a picture, contact the seller, and sent the pic if needed.

I got a Red Melon Discus that looks like his lips got pushed upwards, I believe it can sometimes happen due to excessive lip locking. He eats fine, has good color, and is in great health, it's just one of those things...

Yeah, these were new fish but like I said, seen it before in Angels so didn't upset me apart from fact I've just bought him. Lights kept out to let the new guys settle and I'll keep an eye on him over next few days. Seller contacted anyway for advice but already, I'm rooting for him and want to take him under my careful watchful wing because I feel sorry for him.

Till lights are on, can't get a pic, but best way to describe it is for you all to picture the discus equivalent of Peter Beardsley (the ex-football player for the girls lol). Now take that picture, and then think of that guy chewing a particularly nasty wasp.

Thats my wee discus. Bless him (or her, but he's a he for now!)

well he's getting replaced, so no complaints there. Just hope he gets on, apart from looking like he's hit the glass too many times seems healthy enough. Just need to ensure he gets to food easily enough as really don't want to cull him.
