Im trying to gather as much info on T.Ellioti so as to work out whether I could get away with adding one to my 100g, 5ft tank, which currently consists of rainbows, 1 severum and some corydoras. I have the space - just, but am concerned about their compatiblity, more with the Sev than anything else.

The most I can find out is they max out at 7", should be ok with the rainbows, less aggressive (though not much) than a Meeki (firemouth), good in hard water (which I have), temp, ph etc all ok.

Anyone here have one, I know three-fingers does, so if you see this TF can you give any advice please?

One of my LFS has some wild caught and they are beauts but I dont want to go getting one unless its gonna be ok.

from what i know of them they are a more peacefull cousin of meeki. i seriously toyed with getting some of these a while back how big are your rainbows?

Dwarves are 2", they are the smallest Ive got, the others reach 5".

hmmmm wouldnt like to say with 2" fish but dont see why it shouldnt work with larger rainbows in the 5" area

The praecox can be moved if need be :) Its the compatiblity with the sev Im concerned about really, dont want a war in my lovely peaceful tank.

in a 5 foot tank with plenty of caves/driftwood I don't see why it wouldn't work with the sev.

Thanks Juan, just been to the LFS and they werent sure either  So will speak to their cichlid guy who is apparently in tomorrow and see what he thinks. They are only small at the moment the elliotti, about 1.5", very cute :)

whats the difference between those and normal firemouths?

T.Elliotti are less aggressive and arguably better looking than meekis,

Are these the ones they currently have at Coxwell Minx?

Yeah Davo, got two tanks of the wild caught elliotti and they are very nice :) The woman just wasnt sure if they would be ok or not, so will call them tomorrow and speak to Mark or Kevin and see what they think.

Now if I could find some aureum I wouldnt hesitate to get them

Yeah they've had the elliottis in for a while now, nearly brought one myself a month or so back when i eventually decided on the sajica and aequidens Coeruleopunctatus

I'm sure they'll be fine in your setup,

I was suprised they still had them tbh, thought they would have been snapped up, saw them a few weeks back.

How many do you think I should get then? One to be on the safe side or two and hope they dont pair off?

at 1.5 inches I would start them out in a grow out tank for a bit let them put a couple inches on and then add them to the 5 footer later with the caves and drift wood so that they got some place that they can feel safe. I would probably try for a pair.

Ive got a 10g but thats all thats available for now, would that be ok for them? Til they hit 3" ish?

Couldnt put them in the 50g as Mr Tex would gobble them up :(

Personally i've always stuck to one of each species when it comes to cichlids, Imo minimising the risk of problems occuring,

I also have to admit I'd rather they go into my setup when they are at a young age, that way you sort of know what to expect from them from day one
