Decided On A Better Idea

So as you know, most companys make you into blind sheep by putting in zeolite and carbon and blah de blah. i decided to save myself a fortune and just opted for more bilogical filtration instead! All the bright white media is brand spanking new.

Oh and my filters are labelled in the pictures!

So this is my elite jet flo 100 (480l/h), out with the zeocarb - in with another filter block and 2 filter pads

Interpet PF1 (380l/h), out with the carbon and in with more sponge.

However the filter has one annoying problem, some water bypasses the filter foams and gets in through a gap under the flow adjuster! The solution is to put in a sponge pad above the cartridge itself, this blocks off (to some extent anyway) the flow through the gap and also provides a little extra biological filtration.

Note the tiny gap.

That is the old media, gone yellow with age and fish poop.

Note the difference lol!

Both Filters Back in and running at last, the whole thing (pictures an' all) took just 2 minutes!

Dont know if you notice it or not but thats my failed job at repainting after my cousin put an acetone wipe on it GRRRRR!

The foams i used, these are ideal as there are 3 in a pack for 2 quid and they are almost the right size

it's very common practice NOT to use carbon or zeolite, unless there is a specific need (removing meds, for example).

the only problem is that i have a slightly decreased flow rate now, but only slightly!

yh, thankfully i have been reading the freezing bacteria thread and if that works i can freeze them while i use the carbon!

that thread is a discussion on the possibility of freezing bacteria. Don't hold your breath on a prozen method for doing so.....

Those thermometers measure the temperature of the room as much as the tank Get a nice alcohol one and stick it near the filters The heater would also work better a bit lower down, about half way up the tank, for example

ok, will do! next time i am at the lfs i will pick up a sucker cup thermometer for them i just tried to get th heater in the flow of the water thats all.

but wont the fish get drunk if it smashes?

It won't smash unless you do something stupid and that much alcohol will should not harm the fish in a tank that size

another question, if my old media is cycled and touching the new stuff how long will it take to populate the new stuff?

and will it take longer if it isn't touching?

near impossible question to answer, but to hazard a guess, i would say around 2 months of use might allow some bacteria to colonise it.

another q, how the living mother fish do i get the snails and eggs out of my filter? i have assasin snails but they do jack!
