Dechlorinator / Ro Unit/ Not To Dechlorinate

Hi guys, I myself use dechlorinator in my tanks simply because when i started that was what I was told to do. My understanding is the product gets rid of the chlorine components but also the heavier chloramines.

Having a think recently, I was just pondering on those that have for years of successful fish keeping have never ever used dechlorinators..what benefits have you gained and what are the processes. I have heard varying from leaving the bucket over night to ensuring a powerhead? Also do you then use a heater to ensure the right temperature?

The next thing is RO water, we have a RO unit ready for our first marine tank, we have relatively hard water with a ph 8. My understanding is RO water takes all the nutrients out to make pretty much neutral so using for my water changes not good? If I used this method perhaps would need to add nutrients in? Do you guys use your RO units for other tanks other than marine? I do understand about PH shock etc.

It was just thoughts as speaking to someone the other day, they do water changes very varied from mine and wondered what everyones thoughts were on here as there are many methods and experiences.

I have never used dechlor tbh, and yup
*-It is either leaving the water to stand overnight with an airstone
*-or boiling it and letting it cool down to room temp.

Then its just a case of doing a water change and adding the water in.
It has worked fine.

i dont use dechlor or leave to stand

i was never taught to do this lord knows how many years ago, and it stuck, but works (i am going to get SHOT for that admission )

Thanks for that info guys, may try a mix of hot boiling water then, anyone else used this method too?

I just use water staight from the tap and try to match the temp as its coming out of the tap with my finger. I use conditoner but stopped using it for awhile and didnt have any problems. Its pretty cheap though and as long as your only doing water changes once a week it last quit awile. The one I get not only takes out chemicals like chlorine and chloramines and anything other thing that can be hazardess to the fish. It also helps them from getting stresses and helps there slim coat.

If I am doing large water changes 50% or so (after medicating or just a big clean up) I use a declorinator, but I usually do more frequent smaller changes without and just match the temperature.
