Hi all,

I purchased a Juwel Rio 125L tank 2 weeks ago, and I am in the process of a fish-in cycle with 6 zebra danios and 2 dalmation mollies. I now know that I should have undertaken a fishless cycle, but I am making do with daily water changes, minimal feeding and regular water testing.

The water stats are typically:

Ammonia: 0 - 0.25 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm (my API test has always shown blue, i.e. 0 ppm)
Nitrate: 10 ppm (no change since beginning)
pH: 7.4
Temp: 24-27 degrees

I noticed that one of the zebra danios had gone missing. As I carry out water changes with a jug and bowl, I thought I may have accidentally scooped one out (even though I check) and poured it down the sink.

However, a couple of days later I noticed what appears to be a dead zebra danio stuck vertically between the filter and the glass, right in the corner. I think it may have swam under the filter and up between the filter and the glass (I hope some of you can understand what I mean). I obviously want to remove the dead fish, but I'm not sure how to do it. Is it possible to remove the whole filter unit in a Juwel tank? Alternatively, can I just leave the fish in there to decompose?

Many thanks for the help,
Seb

p.s. as I live in Leicester, I have attempted to contact boboboy to see if he will donate me some mature media. However, the forum won't let me PM him. Does anyone know why?

the dead fish will just release ammonia. I think you can remove the unit; other people have :good:

You need to post a certain number of messages before being eligible to send PMs. I recommend trying to contact a moderator and see if he/she can activate this feature for you before you fulfill the requirement.

You can remove the unit but with quite a bit of hassle. I removed mine.

The filter housing is fixed to the glass with blobs of silicone, to get it off you need to empty the tank as much as you can, preferably take out roughly 70%.

You then need a razor blade to gently slice the blobs of silicone holding it on, being careful not to slice any silicone tat bonds the corners of the tank.

Read this thread explaining in more detail how to do it: Removing Juwel Internal Filter

After removing it you will obviously need some silicone to stick it back to the glass.

Afterwards always make sure your substrate covers any gaps at the bottom of the filter

Hi all,

Many thanks for the replies.

I didn't realise it would involve that kind of procedure. Do you think I can just leave the fish there to decompose and monitor the water quality accordingly? Will a decomposing fish create any diseases in the tank? The corpse appears to have deteriorated quite a bit already.

Youngfisher - I live in Cosby, just to the SW of Leicester. Where abouts are you based?

Thanks again,
Seb

If I drive round one evening, would you be willing to donate some media? I would be very grateful if you have any going spare.

I will speak to my dad ASAP, he might have some spare.
I will get back to you.
:good:

As to the dead fish you really will need to remove it otherwise can cause an ammonia spike and harm the other fish, I kinda get what you mean with the filter, havent looked at the above link yet, is there no way to get some sort of contraption in there to nudge it out?

Could a moderator please give me the rights to PM boboboy about possibly receiving some donated media? I have added him as a friend, but I'm still not able to privately message him.

Many thanks,
Seb
