I came in from work today and found a dead fish (not sure how long its been there but its hidden behind one of the plants), I only just noticed it. Its a Platy and its encased in a big white sack. Can anyone tell me what this is and whats goin on? Am gonna remove it in a second but its just really confused me...looks gross lol

That means it's rotten. The white is bacteria. Just remove it asap-- not only does it look terrible to customers, but the body will pollute the tank and spread bacteria to other fish. Obviously with so many tanks, the odd one slips through the cracks, but whenever this happens en masse (I have seen it happen), eyebrows shoot up. Just keep on top of it and check often for dead bodies. Obviously with fresh shipments, some fish are on their last legs, but there is nothing worse for store image than tanks full of dead or diseased fish!

Cheers,

Cheers,
So true.. was at a Discount store just yesterday and I had no problems saying no when the associate asked me if I wanted to buy any fish. I counted at least a dozen dead fish and several dead frogs. Geez!

Glad to see the OP is on top of it!

maybe if you read it properly you could see it isnt a WORK place he got HOME from work

but manicmonkey, it is just basically decaying, get it out and flush it, keep an eye on other fish, and maybe check levels of water to make sure the decomposing fish hasnt fiddled with your levels

its nothing major so dont worry
