Daz's Pfk Nano Tank Journal

Very nice tank! How long did you wait before putting the puffer in? (I don't want to knuckle you down for not giving it 6 weeks, his bioload must be next to nothing.) The plants look nice. Reminds me, I'll have to write an update on mine.

If i didnt cycle the tank the puffer would be dead by now ;) as they are true freshwater fish.....

The media is matured from my cannister filter on my community tank so was able to put him in 2 weeks after the tank was set up. You can find my "original" planted nano before i changed it all to this current layout in the photo forum part of this site.

It is starting to take quite a nice shape now.

Do you have the Egeria in there to beat the algae?

That was how I used mine before I got rid of it. It grew like mad and got quite leggy.

Its in there for that reason and for the puffers sake :) Puffers like to interact with plants hence when they backdrop is full of tall plants :) Although my puffers spends alot of time between the hairgrass and staring at the ricca :)

Well nearly another week has passed and the hairgrass is still filling out very nicley indeed. The ricca is also growing well and pearling nice. Need to get a moonlight for this tank :)

Anyway here are some updated photos. Ive tried to add glosso to the tank but it dosent seem to sit to well in the sand. A few bits have stayed down so hopefully they will tkae off. I guess time will tell.

Would be nice to break up the green i admit. Just whenever ive had a red plant its died on me. Maybe some Myriophyllum Matogrossense or is there a differet plant you think would look nice? :)

Hope you sort your BBA out. I managed to get my hair algae in this tank pretty much gone. Just need to keep an eye on it all.

Red plants need more light and iron than green plants as Im sure you know.
Myriophyllum would be nice. Also red ludwigia, Alternanthera reineckii and Rotala macrandra.

Got 22 watts of light so sure that should be okish possibly as i know the WPG rule dont quite work on Nanos. Looking at buying some of the Tropica fert thats doing the rounds at the moment. So maybe once i decide il get some ordered :D

It`s starting to look preety sweet, Daz.

Leaf contrast is nice, maybe you need a slightly stronger mid ground to blend the whole tank together.

I see what you mean. Any ideas of what plants to use. I should really have made my sand sweep upwards i think but thats for another project when i get fed up with this layout :D

Maybe another crypt in there or some java fern might break it up a bit??

The pearling looks great Daz. I agree with the others, perhaps add some plants that can add contrast, or some wood, anything that might break things up a bit. I love what you've done though, good work!

tanks looking really healthy

where did you get your lights from?

A member here (three-fingers) sold me his one as he purchased some Arc-Pods so his extra one was not needed so i have two of the ones that came with the cube. If you wanted them to match i looked everywhere for one and cudn't locate one (my LFS who sell the same style tank have a tottaly different light fitting). Only found ones that will do the job your lookign for on eBay im afraid. Check out Radars journal for the links :)

Thanks im surprised the Ricca is pearlign considering im only using DIY co2. I can see where your all coming from about the contract its something i need to work on. I do have wood for this tank, i started to soak it and some white fuzzy stuff grew on it so its being completly dried then re-soaked but i may purchase another bit if i find the right shape.

Thanks for the kind words of encoragment :good:
