Sorry couldn't resist the big brother style title!!

Well I've now had my 3 gourami's and 6 pristilla tetras for 11 days I did my first ever 20% weekly water change last sunday, my ammonia and nitrite are 0. :good: Just 1 little problem. My bogwood has decided to make my water yellowy again. To clear my water up again can I do a bigger water change or would you suggest a smaller water change everyday for a couple of days.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received as I don't want to undo all of the work I have done to get this far. Becky

Hi Becky,

Sounds great! Water changes will indeed help with the tannins. If it bothers you too much, you can consider trying to work a layer of activated carbon into your filter. You need to rinse the carbon first as it will have dust. Then you put it in and leave it in for three days. Hopefully it will reduce the yellow color somewhat. After 3 days you take it out and toss it. Repeat as needed.

If you already have an air pump, you could even buy a cheap simple clear plastic internal filter, the little box type. fill it with rinsed carbon and hook an airline to it (use and splitter if you still have an airstone you want running.) This way you wouldn't have to disturb your main filter - also this little box filter could be used for other things like filling it with poly for polishing your water prior to showing off your tank or something like that.

The yellow water will eventually go away one way or the other.

glad it's all going well.

the yellowing is just tannines, it's completely harmless, some fish even like it. so the only reason to remove it is if you don't like te colour of the water.

best way to get rid of it is to remove it from the tank, put it in a bucket of water, empty the water out every day and fill it up with new water, keep doing this until the water in the bucket is clear.
