hi ive been looking at these fish and everywhere seems to have different information on them are they fresh or brackish and if brackish what sg are we looking at? thanks :good:

In terms of the science, three species are strictly freshwater, and two are brackish as well as freshwater.

Datnioides campbelli BW/FW
Datnioides microlepis FW
Datnioides polota BW/FW
Datnioides pulcher FW
Datnioides undecimradiatus FW

Having said this, all three freshwater species will tolerate low-end brackish (say, SG 1.003), and both brackish water species seem to tolerate freshwater conditions for long periods.

Other factors, such as water quality (especially nitrates) may be more important for long term care. I'd recommend the brackish water species be kept in brackish water, as does Frank Schaefer in the Aqualog book of brackish water fishes, but other fishkeepers have had good results keeping all five species in freshwater aquaria. On the other hand, keeping the brackish water species in soft, acidic water conditions would probably be very unwise.

Cheers, Neale

so witch one is Coius quadrifasciatus best in just ive seen them on trimar and well i want 1 :good:

That's Datnioides polota.

http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/summary/Speci...ry.php?id=14698

It's a brackish/freshwater one. It's distribution is coastal, and while it enters freshwater, it is not found very far from the sea. Compare this with, say, Datnioides microlepis, which is found hundreds of miles inland in places like Laos well up the Mekong river system. While there's no question that some people have kept Datnioides polota in freshwater without problems, that may depend on whether the fish was collected from a brackish or freshwater habitat. I'd heartily recommend keeping it in a low-end brackish system with, say, Mystus gulio as the obligatory catfish.

Cheers, Neale
