Danny's Cycle...

Keep an eye on your levels, if they raise above 0.25ppm do a change, if they stay at 0.25ppm I'd leave it a while and just keep testing.

Andy

Okie doke :)

I'm not sure if you have seen the updates I have been doing, but the Nitrite seems to be between 0ppm and 0.25ppm

I will upload a picture if you wanted to see for yourself and get a better idea....?

Andy, you were definitely on to something with the gravel cleaning. It seems to have helped us both. My nitrites were rising to 5 overnight and after many wc were rising at approx 1.0 in 4 hours. After my removing and cleaning gravel and reassembling, adding accu-clear to bind last dust bits from gravel it has helped me too. My nitrites have risen only 0.05 in 5 hours, and the 0.05 of ammonia I had from tap water has vanished in those 5 hours. (I say 0.05 as the colour only just changed from base readings, but were not quite zero). Yet to see nitrates rise by much, but I have been doing so many water changes I was not expecting to see much at present.
I am praying, as poor Danny is, this is going to hold out, as it is exhausting, I know how poor Danny feels with water changes. For the first time in 6 days I have only done the one 100% today and not the 4-5 x 70% I was doing, a major one but still great.

My gravel vac is one of those battery ones, it was puling up gravel half-way up the wider tube and plenty of debris was moving up tube, but I guess just not enough. The wide part of the gravel vac is only about 4 inches tall though, so maybe Id be better off with the standard tube ones.....then I can pull up more and get deeper, though my gravel is only 3/4 to 1 inch thick anyway, as I have no plants other than moss balls.

I am hoping my nitrites continue to rise very slowly and no more 5 spikes overnight. Will retest again tonight......

Good luck Danny, Im wishing you on to success mate!

I think the 100% change has certainly done something.

Yes the constant water changes did get a bit exhausting, Just felt like I couldn't get the Nitrites to drop at all!

But I thought of totally changing the gravel and it seems to have worked :)

I started to use the battery powered Gravel cleaner also, but changed to a standard tube cleaner (where you get air trapped and the water flows... crap with explaining lol sorry...)

It seems to work better in my eyes :S

Anyway, I am keeping an eye on the Nitrite and Ammonia every few hours to make sure there isn't any dramatic changes in the water parameters.

Thank you for your support doggiebag :)

I wish you all the best also... We WILL get through this :good:

lol, course we will Danny, though sometimes it feels otherwise, we have moral support in each other though

Just glad I found this thread, it has been great finding someone doing a fish-in cycle like me and struggling at the same point too. Felt like I wasn't so alone lol Now we are official cycle partners :good: My OH is so bored with hearing about it all lol We can moan on here and feel each others pain

Yeah we will :) haha. Just need to hang on a little bit longer!!

Yeah it nice to see other people in the same situation (Well obviously not nice to see it but you know what I mean...)

Haha yes, Cycle partners! :good:

And my missus is getting a bit fed up also hearing about my Fishues...

It may have been a case of the gravel not having enough of a thorough clean before adding it originally. I also tend to use a gravel vac that is slightly bigger than the recommended one for my tank, the bigger ones tend to have much wider tubes and pick up more waste in one go. One thing to watch with a bigger gravel vac though is the speed the water comes out, I fill a 15L buket in about 20 seconds

Anyway, glad you both now seem to be on track!

Keep up the goodwork both of you :good:

Andy

Yep, my Hubby feels for her, he can sympathise to being a cycle widow lol

I rang him at work this morning gushing about having 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites on the minnow tank after 59 days, but he just was like, 'Yay, great' in a real flat tone, just didn't feel the joy lol He's deffo real bored by the whole thing now, though amazed at my dedication with water changes taking so many hours in my day.

Thanks Andy, I just copied Danny after your suggestion and after seeing his nitrates getting 0, so went for it lol Will see how it holds later on and overnight, just great to start from a true zero for once, bet Im back in the morning crying with sky high nitrites in betta tank and ammonia back in minnow one. I dare not breathe when I do the tests today and in the morning lol, bet Danny is the same.

Yeah I am definitely the same haha...

I just want to keep testing my water now to make sure its staying low!
(I even dreamed about it last night... )

rofl, thank god Im not the only one, I have been dreaming of fish for ages now. Im so worried about the poor things enduring a cycle Im caring for them in my sleep and testing lol

Yay!!!!!!!!!!! Go Danny, go Danny, go Danny.......

my next test is at 7pm for the nitrite spiking betta tank, minnows will be in the morning.......bet my betta has crept back up...I almost want to test now,but Im too scared lol

You should have a sneeky test ;) haha

Okay, okay, I did it an hour early. I was actually feeling sick in case it had shot up, scared to look before time up lol

<Drum roll> ammonia 0 nitrites <0.25 around the 0.10-0.15 mark !!!! It is only rising about 0.05 in 4-5 hours ! Yesterday it would have been at 2 by now. Fingers crossed this is over the worst and it will hold overnight. Poor betta can have arest from water changes, only that big one today, and hopefully back to once a day smaller ones if it holds around 0.25 in 24 hours. Now to see them disappear and make nitrates.....21 days with new filter in his tank......

Now I know the minnow tank will not be done, I can't have them both do well, way too good. Besides they never had a nitrite spike, never went above 0.50, so maybe that is still to come, 59 days and counting there.....

Okay, your next one is 10pm, over to you........
