Danio Babies!

I just did a water change, in which i gravel vac directly into my white sink (plug in) and discovered 15 little critters.

I've only got the one, 28L tank so for the time being i pipetted them into an empty 2L icecream carton.

Danios are said to be "coldwater" fish, will they be ok at room temperature? I don't have a second heater.

Ive put a drop of Liquifry for egg-layers in and given them some duckweed for cover. I've put a lamp over to provide light and maybe provide a bit of heat. Is this a satisfactory setup considering my resources?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I can't really comment on your set up, although maybe get a plant in there or something for more places to hide. I also seem to think small fish can eat brine shrimp (you can buy it frozen) - just defrost before giving it to them.

They should do ok at room temperature; if you'd like just take a little water out and replace with warmer water a few times a day so it doesn't get too cold for them?

Just chucked in a clump of floating Riccia, about the size of the lamp head in the bottom pic, for a bit mroe cover.

They sould be ok as they can live without heated water so the lamp should do them fine. Just crush some fish food as fine as you can to a powder and they will be ok. You can always get fry food in liquid form on the net - I get mine from Ebay and it gets to you in a couple of days.

The only thing you will need to watch out for is the water quality as you are not running a filter in there. Although I doubt that they will cause much ammonia etc being so tiny it will be the food they dont eat that will cause the problems so dont overfeed and test the water daily.

That's exactly what i've got, good old liquifry no.1 off ebay! It just seems to form a cloud in the water since i've got no real agitation at the surface, shall i give it a stir?

Im sure they will find it. If you have some established plants that you could put in or a moss ball and a little of the gravel from your tank there will be infusoria on them which will help.

They are as cute as a button aren't they? Mine never survived in the tank as they all got scoffed as soon as they were visible.

i have actually got a spare moss ball, although it won't have much in the way of food on it since it sits in a glass on my windowsill - i bought two small ones off ebay a while back, when they arrived they weren't so 'small' so i only popped one in my tank.

I'll chuck some gravel in, i've already noticed some little bugs darting around in the water with them that was vacuumed, think they're probably cyclops - too small to see any detail.

there are 15, what are their survival odds, does anyone know? will they need moving to a larger receptical later on or can i put them back in the main tank? (Only danios in there).

I would say the survival rate is pretty high as long as the water stats stay good! I would take the moss ball out of the main tank as that will have infusoria on it and put that in with the babies, and put the one thats in a glass on your windowsill in the main tank .

Your adult Danios will eat them! The rule is dont add any fry to the tank until they are too large to fit in any other fishes mouths!

Yeah i know my adults will eat them! Cheeky beggars. How long will it take them to grow to an 'inedible' size do you think? I don't know how long it takes a danio to reach adulthood.

Danio fry have a rapid growth rate! Within 3 months, they are capable of reproducing.
