A happy new year to all who read this.A couple of questions. Can any one tell me if it is the norm for female dalmation mollies to turn black with age and will different types of mollies breed easily? cheers Bruce

talking about my dalmation molly and fertility of mollies in general makes my eye twitch at present.... :hyper:

she's on her 3rd birthing so far and has produced over 35 fry between them, not all lived with time in the tank of course, but she seems to be a very fertile easy breeding fish.....darn it!

had to buy another 3ft tank just to house her offspring :hyper:

Hi there wan1967.
In a pet shop there are no different types of mollies. All of the mollies in a typical pet shop are crosses of P. sphenops and other wild type mollies. The color variations are not different fish but merely different characteristics chosen by the commercial breeders. As far as the fish are concerned, they are all the same fish. So-called dalmatian mollies will breed freely with greens, sailfins and black mollies, lyretailed or otherwise. You will not find any pure wild type mollies like P. velifera or P. sphenops in a typical pet shop, ever.
I have noticed that dalmatians do indeed grow darker with age.
