Hav just read Miss Wiggles pinned topic on cycling, wandering with regards to mature media how this works as the filter I have suggests to change the media every 2 weeks?

The manufacturers tell you to replace the media because it makes them more money.
Only change the sponges if they're starting to fall apart.
When you clean them, only rinse in tank water not tap water.

As far as filter manufacturers are concerned, they could make plenty of money if they gave away the filters. My own LFS has an exchange day every year where a manufacturer's rep comes in and will swap a new filter for any filter you bring in. It is like the business model for razors and razor blades. As long as people buy the blades, you can give away the razor.
Unfortunately, for the fish, the filter cartridges contain all of the good stuff we need for the fish. That means that we simply cannot go along with the manufacturer's business model. Instead we make the filter element last as long as we can.
