If you are useing mature media then you may have skiped phase 1 of the cycle all together.

i have a fluvel 405 and two baskets are full of new biomax and one full of old media one is empty incase i ever need carbon

Owwww, an empty basket!!!!!! No way! Pack that filter right from the start 
I would but in some fine foam media and forget the 'space for carbon' Not needed these days really unless you need to remove staining caused by tannins or old medication. In that case if you needed to use carbon later much better to remove matured media and hang it in the water flow then pop the carbon in for a couple of days (at most) then put the media back in.
